Not surprisingly, officials around Birmingham and Hueytown, Alabama, haven’t forgotten the fabled “Alabama Gang.” That group is memorialized by Allison-Bonnett Memorial Highway, Davey Allison Boulevard, Red Farmer Drive and Bobby Allison Lane The latter is a ring road named for the speedway’s builder/owner/president from 1947 until his death in 1999 Martinsville Speedway has Speedway Road and Speedway Boulevard, as well as Clay Earles Drive. Also, there’s a Sadler Drive for the racing brothers-Elliott and Hermie-in their hometown of Emporia. Not far away, Wood Brothers Racing in Stuart is recognized by 21 Performance Drive and Wood Brothers Drive. Scott Memorial Highway, the city also named a neighborhood street for him. 59/29 near Danville for the late Wendell Scott, the only black driver to win a Cup Series race. And up in Mooresville (Race City USA) you’ll find that Penske Way-of course, for legendary owner Roger Penske-branches off from (what else?) Excellence Lane.Īt least six other Southeastern states have signs honoring NASCAR drivers and owners. Nearby, there’s Haas Way for Gene Haas, co-owner of Stewart Haas Racing and sole owner of Haas F1. In Concord, on the grounds of the Concord-Padgett Regional Airport, you’ll find Roush Place for championship-winning owner Jack Roush. Hendrick’s father, however, is honored by Papa Joe Hendrick Boulevard, which intersects with Bruton Smith Boulevard to bring visitors to the race shops and museum His massive racing campus near CMS is crisscrossed by roads and streets, but none is named for him or any of his drivers. As puzzling as it may seem, there’s no roadside recognition in the Charlotte area for 16-time championship owner Rick Hendrick. A five-mile section of I-85 in the Lexington/High Point area is designated Richard Childress Express, marking an area not far from the Richard Childress Racing campus and the team owner’s popular vineyard and hospitality center on I-285/Business 52. ![]() ![]() Although probably unfamiliar to current fans, the late Herb Thomas, two-time Cup Series champion and 47-time winner, is memorialized with a section of Route 87 near his hometown of Olivia, in Harnett County A 5-mile stretch near the county’s eastern end is named for driver/six-time championship owner, the late Junior Johnson, and a 5-mile stretch at the county’s western end is named for former champion and media personality, the late Benny Parsons Two areas along Route 421 into the northwestern part of the state are named for legendary Wilkes County natives. (There’s no such recognition for his brother, two-time champion Terry Labonte, also a nearby resident) Two sections of I-85 between Greensboro and Charlotte are named for Hall of Famer drivers: the 1.6-mile Jeff Gordon Expressway for the four-time champion near the Charlotte-Concord line in Mecklenburg-Cabarrus counties (also, Jeff Gordon Boulevard takes folks into Gordon’s boyhood hometown of Pittsboro, Indiana) and a section of the heavily traveled interstate highway near Trinity marking the hometown of former Xfinity and Cup Series champion Bobby Labonte. ![]()
